The U.S. and Iran will sign or otherwise formally finalize an agreement matching the terms Trump described on August 1-2 (full Hormuz reopening plus a verified end to Iran's nuclear weapons program) within three weeks, by August 23.

The record since

  • 11 Aug 26 No. 42 · revised to 35%
Trump countered Iran's reparations demand with his own compensation claim rather than engaging Tehran's terms -- another round of dueling public demands, not direct negotiation, pushing further from a signable deal by August 23.

What would overturn it

A joint U.S.-Iran statement, IAEA confirmation of a nuclear agreement, or documented full reopening of Hormuz to normal commercial transit volumes by August 23. Continued negotiation without a signed instrument, or collapse of the outline, would overturn the call.

The verdict

Miss  Resolved 24 Aug 26.

The US-Iran memorandum-of-understanding deadline expired Aug 17 with no signed instrument — talks deadlocked over Hormuz shipping-route control and frozen funds; no IAEA-verified end to Iran's nuclear program or full commercial Hormuz reopening occurred by Aug 23.

Treated the Aug 1-2 Trump framing as near-final when the Hormuz-route and nuclear tracks were still separate, unresolved negotiations that then collapsed at the MOU deadline.

As logged at issue

Whether Trump's announced 'perimeters of a deal' with Iran -- full Hormuz reopening for an end to Iran's nuclear program -- actually gets signed within three weeks is a genuine toss-up: the terms are far more sweeping than anything negotiated so far, and we'd want to see a joint statement or IAEA confirmation, not just another announced outline, before calling it done.
