The record since

  • 5 Aug 26 No. 36 · revised to 60%
A suspected Houthi strike sank the Indian-flagged Faize Noore Oliya off Hodeidah and the Houthis separately claimed an eighth strike on Saudi-linked shipping (the tanker Wafaa) -- continued attacks against a widening target set raise the odds a major line issues a public transit suspension before September 3.
  • 9 Aug 26 No. 40 · revised to 68%
A new IRGC missile strike on an ADNOC tanker near Khasab on August 8 -- one of roughly 15 attacks on Emirati vessels since February -- widens the target set again and raises the odds a major carrier finally issues a public Hormuz transit suspension before September 3.
  • 14 Aug 26 No. 45 · revised to 30%
Research finds Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd were already suspended before the August 3 Minoan Pioneer strike (Maersk since March), making a fresh suspension specifically attributable to that trigger less likely -- the majors have nothing left to newly suspend.

What would overturn it

A named major line (e.g. Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, a major tanker pool) issuing a public suspension notice, versus continued transits under elevated risk premiums.

The verdict

Non liquet  Resolved 7 Sep 26.

Maersk's Hormuz-avoidance posture pre-dates the Aug 3 Minoan Pioneer strike (traceable to precautionary measures from as early as April/May 2026, continuing through a fragile ceasefire); its Aug 31 update describes an ongoing, evolving posture with paid transit under a $1,000/container surcharge rather than a fresh public suspension announced in reaction to this specific strike.

The call's premise (a NEW suspension triggered by this specific strike) didn't match the actual situation (an already-ongoing precautionary posture predating the trigger, trending toward conditional/paid resumption by month's end) — the evidence doesn't cleanly satisfy either the claim or its counter-signal. When drafting a call keyed to a single trigger event, first confirm the relevant actor's posture wasn't already set before that event, or the resolution becomes unfalsifiable.

As logged at issue

We think it's roughly a coin flip whether a major container or tanker line publicly suspends new Hormuz transits within 30 days, given five attacks since July 6 and Monday's Minoan Pioneer strike leaving a crew member missing; a formal claim of responsibility for the strike, rather than continued unattributed hits, would tip this toward suspension by removing the ambiguity insurers currently price around.
