What would overturn it

An actual Taliban-claimed strike or incursion into Pakistani territory would confirm; a shift to diplomatic protest only, or a quiet lull matching the three-month calm that preceded this week's escalation, would overturn it.

The verdict

Non liquet  Resolved 12 Oct 26.

Taliban vowed a response and Pakistan claimed to repel border attacks (Taliban denied), but no clearly Taliban-claimed strike found.

Require a claimant-specific signal in the counter-signal; contested border-clash claims blur the grade.

As logged at issue

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid warned Pakistan will face "an appropriate response" after Thursday's strikes, the sharpest exchange since February's clashes; but the two sides had also let nearly three months of calm hold since then, so this reads as a genuine toss-up rather than an escalation certainty.
