Foreign interdictions flagged in September 2026

| September held level on volume — 51 foreign interdictions against August’s 50 (43 seizures and 8 arrests) — but shifted sharply in what was caught. Currency and monetary-instrument cases jumped from 2 to 12, ten of them gold, centred on India and Bangladesh, which displaced Hong Kong and Indonesia at the top of the country count. The headline drug weight of about 176 tonnes is misleading: roughly 156 tonnes is a single aggregate entry, Operation Atlas Nexus; without it the month is near 20 tonnes, well below August’s 76. Wildlife trafficking, three cases in August, fell to none. |

Emerging Trends
Gold overtakes cash as the month’s money story
Currency and monetary-instrument items rose from 2 in August to 12, and ten were gold (one in August, three in July). India’s revenue-intelligence directorate ran repeated sweeps — 42 kg and 25 arrests early in the month, 41 kg across Delhi and the Halderpara border post, and at month’s end a courier network estimated to have moved 318 kg across the India–Bangladesh border over nine months. Dhaka airport added three finds, including 120 bars in a belt worn by an airline ground technician. Insiders — airline and airport staff — recur across cases: the metal is easy to hide, so the smugglers are buying access. Either a real shift to value-dense smuggling or one very productive agency; October will tell.
Cocaine: chemical and long-range concealment
Cocaine stayed the largest single type (11 seizures) but the methods moved. Belgian customs found cocaine dissolved in liquid soap in a container from Colombia; Macau caught a courier with liquid cocaine sewn into 11 garments, a first for local police; France seized nearly 4 tonnes in Ghanaian plastic waste at Dunkirk. At sea, Spain took 3.4 tonnes from a speedboat off the Canaries and 2.1 tonnes from a yacht 400 miles off Galicia. As port detection improves, loads are shifting from bales to chemically hidden forms and from containers to long-range private vessels.
An Indian Ocean methamphetamine and heroin flow
Three seizures of 460 kg or more landed in three countries: 464 kg of methamphetamine in Thailand after a van crashed during a chase, 463 kg hidden in a towel container from Pakistan at Colombo, and 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine from an Iranian dhow off Lakshadweep on the month’s last day. Sri Lanka added 81 kg off Jaffna and Malaysia 80 kg declared as “tofu cat litter.” Together they read as a maritime flow from Myanmar, Pakistan and Iran toward South and Southeast Asia surfacing port by port.
Money networks behind the shipments; wildlife goes quiet
Spain and Europol dismantled the “Dubai Bank,” a hawala-style network moving cocaine proceeds without cash crossing borders (21 arrests, about €20M frozen), alongside an ’Ndrangheta pipeline raid in São Paulo and a Camorra-linked euro-counterfeiting ring across Germany, Italy and Spain — continuing August’s shift toward investigation-driven takedowns. Meanwhile wildlife trafficking (3 cases in August) and counterfeit-goods seizures disappeared from the ledger; if they stay absent in October, August was a spike, not a trend.
