So what?  Cyprus is an eastern Mediterranean transshipment node, and a single command with a narcotics branch and an international-relations desk gives customs and border counterparts one door to knock on. The missing interception law is the limit: without it the new unit can share intelligence but will struggle to build cases that hold in court.

So what?  Extending domestic national-security law to cover surveillance of a base on a sovereign UK overseas territory closes a jurisdictional gap that previously left forward military and liaison postings on foreign or dependent soil in a legal gray zone. Watch whether this precedent gets applied to any similar hostile-surveillance case at a preclearance or attaché post rather than staying limited to Cyprus's military bases, since a broader application would extend the same criminal cover to civilian forward posts as well.
