So what?  This is one of the deadliest single-boat incidents recorded on the Atlantic route this year, on a corridor that increasingly substitutes for Mediterranean crossings that European and North African enforcement have made harder. Expect smuggling networks operating out of the Gambia-Senegal-Mauritania coast to keep pushing longer, more dangerous voyages as the shorter Mediterranean routes stay under heavier patrol — a trade-off that raises the mortality rate even if total crossing attempts do not rise.
