Germany's former spy chief August Hanning is jailed on treason and espionage charges, and Azerbaijan denies a report that it was his client

National SecurityGermanyAzerbaijan
So what?  The new element is the Azerbaijan allegation and its denial. If a trusted insider fed a decade of classified reporting to a foreign service, German partners are likely to tighten what they share with outside consultants, and that caution will reach liaison channels on customs and border intelligence. Azerbaijan's denial plus prosecutors declining to name the recipient suggests Berlin will keep this a legal case rather than a diplomatic one, unless the indictment names the service.
