Russia’s FSB detains a Japanese reporter on Sakhalin on spying allegations; Tokyo summons Moscow’s ambassador

National SecurityRussiaJapan
So what?  Detaining a foreign journalist in the Far East signals that Moscow will treat access around Sakhalin and the Kuril approaches as a security matter, which chills Japanese presence at Russian border and port towns. It also hands Moscow a bargaining chip against Tokyo while the two lack a peace treaty. Release or deportation without trial would suggest the case was meant as a message and not a prosecution.
