No. 118 · Monday, 26 October 2026
Mexico orders a former Chihuahua prosecutor to stand trial for treason over a CIA-assisted drug-lab operation
So what? A treason charge for hosting U.S. personnel without federal notification is a deterrent to every state-level official who works with American liaison officers. The most likely result is tighter Mexican notification protocols and slower field cooperation on lab and precursor work, not a break. The case widening to federal officials would change that.

No. 107 · Thursday, 15 October 2026
Mexico’s foreign secretary tells the Senate that sovereignty is not negotiable and that security cooperation runs through a single channel
So what? The single-channel line is a claim over who may deal with Mexican security services, so liaison work with Mexican counterparts will route through the Foreign Ministry rather than around it. The lean is that Mexico City uses the falling fentanyl-seizure figure as leverage in the trade-agreement review, and a unilateral U.S. cartel action on Mexican soil would be the signal that breaks the channel.
