So what?  A deal Ottawa can’t yet bind its own provinces to shows how far “very close” still is from enforceable, and Mexico is negotiating against Canadian terms that keep shifting under it. Expect customs brokers on both the northern and southern US borders to keep contingency lanes staffed past this week’s deadline, since a stalled alcohol carve-out could reopen the tariff snapback with little notice.

So what?  Canada conceding on alcohol and dairy while drawing a harder line on autos signals Ottawa sees its retaliatory auto tariffs, not the other sticking points, as the real bargaining chip left three days from the deadline. If the tariff takes effect as scheduled, cross-border auto-parts and agri-food shipments at land ports of entry are the first place to watch for congestion signals.

So what?  Two of the three USMCA partners are now negotiating from pre-emptive concession rather than retaliation, a sign the bloc's tariff dispute is settling into managed de-escalation rather than an open trade war. Expect the August 19 deadline to produce a partial framework rather than either a full climbdown or the threatened 50% tariffs landing exactly as announced.

So what?  A quota deal would spare a wide swath of cross-border manufacturing supply chains from a sudden cost shock, but the two sides have missed deadlines on this exact dispute before, and northern ports of entry should expect a fresh wave of entry-summary corrections if the deadline lapses without one. Watch whether Ottawa pairs any deal with a formal CUSMA dispute filing — a parallel legal track that would signal Canada doesn't trust the quota talks alone.
