The account for Week of 31 August 2026 · No. II
7 of 12
7 hits · 5 misses · 58% this week  |  158 calls still open
Twelve of this week's thirteen matured calls resolved to a verdict — seven held, for 58 percent, lifting the lifetime record to 52 of 97 graded (54 percent). The strongest reads stayed anchored to mechanics already in motion — a canal authority's own drought-driven cuts, a Houthi campaign that kept hitting exactly where it had already struck. The misses cluster on formal process again: a sanctions package, a scam-network raid, and a court-ordered mining suspension were all read as imminent institutional follow-through that stayed stuck at the announcement stage. One call — on whether a shipping line would newly suspend Hormuz transits — is set aside as non liquet: the trigger event we keyed it to arrived on top of a precautionary posture already months old.

Notable This Week
CALL № 95 MISS
National Security Colombia
The call. Colombian prosecutors formally charge the intercepted August 5 Cauca explosives plot to a named Estado Mayor Central commander within 30 days.
The verdict. No formal indictment reaching EMC leadership was reported in the window. The one commander directly tied to the plot, explosives chief “Max Max,” was killed in a military raid on August 12 rather than captured — the case remains an open investigation.
What we missed: a named suspect killed rather than captured breaks the chain from a splashy interdiction to a courtroom indictment just as completely as one who goes into hiding.
CALL № 94 MISS
National Security European Union Russia
The call. The EU formally tables Kaja Kallas's proposed new Russia sanctions package within 14 days of the August 21 Kryvyi Rih strike.
The verdict. No formal Commission proposal was circulated to member states by the deadline; the package was still in the informal planning stage, with final target lists unpublished and adoption explicitly aimed at autumn.
What we missed: a public statement of intent isn't the formal step itself — this is now the fourth straight month a "does the announcement convert into paperwork" call has missed the same way.
CALL № 93 HIT
National Security Yemen Saudi Arabia
The call. The Houthi movement carries out at least one further attack on Saudi Arabia within 14 days of August 20's claimed Najran airport and Aramco strikes.
The verdict. On August 24, a ballistic missile struck the Saudi-flagged tanker Amzan off Yanbu, Houthi forces claiming the attack directly — the third strike in an unbroken run after Jizan (Aug 9) and Najran/Aramco (Aug 20).
The tell: when an actor is already mid-campaign against a target category, betting they hit it again beats betting on a sudden stop.
CALL № 88 HIT
Illicit Trade & Economic Security Panama
The call. The Panama Canal Authority announces at least one further transit or booking restriction, beyond the already-scheduled auction halt and draft cut, before September 1.
The verdict. On August 20 the ACP cut daily transits from 36 to 34 (with a further cut to 32 planned for mid-September) and reduced auction slots, citing watershed rainfall still running below normal.
The tell: a drought that hasn't broken doesn't need a new trigger to force the next cut — once a watershed authority is already cutting on a schedule, that's closer to reading a chart than making a prediction.
