So what?  The Algeria-to-Spain crossing is now the one growing flow, so the next pressure point on the Schengen debate is Spanish and Balearic arrivals rather than Lampedusa. That weakens the case from Austria, Greece and Germany for emergency powers, because the headline decline undercuts the argument that arrivals are surging. The Central Mediterranean drop may partly reflect smugglers redirecting toward the Algerian route, which would make the overall decline look larger than the underlying pressure.

So what?  A route realignment this sharp — Algeria displacing Morocco as the dominant departure country in under a year — means enforcement and screening resources calibrated to the old Moroccan-dominated pattern are chasing the wrong geography, and it comes as Algerian naval interceptions are falling rather than rising. Watch whether Spain and the EU shift diplomatic and border-cooperation pressure toward Algiers to match where the flow has actually moved.

So what?  A financial-pressure tool aimed at smugglers' assets is a genuine capability upgrade if the Council approves it, but the Algeria data point is the more immediate operational signal: routes are consolidating rather than disappearing, and enforcement pressure elsewhere is pushing volume toward a corridor with less-established interdiction infrastructure. Expect Spain's western approaches to see disproportionate pressure relative to the bloc-wide numbers.
