Chile reports irregular entries at Colchane down nearly 98% as its army-built border trench goes in
So what? The remaining 2026 catches are concentrated at Chacalluta, the Peru-side crossing (191 of the 286), so that is the first place a rerouted flow would show up; the source does not establish that it has moved there. Contraband seizures along the same northern routes rose more than 225%, which officials link to patrol capacity shifting toward smuggling, so networks that once moved people may be pivoting to goods.

Ships are diverting around South America as Panama Canal limits bite, with Strait of Magellan pilot requests up 70% year on year
So what? Every ship that goes around the Horn adds days to Asia-to-U.S. East Coast and Gulf runs, which moves arrival timing and port congestion for cargo that targeters expect on a fixed schedule. Slot prices at this level also reward carriers that tranship or split loads, so expect more cargo reaching U.S. ports through intermediate hubs, unless stabilizing Gatun Lake levels lift the transit cap soon.

Chile expands its regional network of anti-organized-crime pacts across the Southern Cone
So what? A Chilean-led framework covering customs, migration, and financial-analysis-unit cooperation gives outside partners a single regional table to plug into, rather than negotiating separate bilateral deals with each Andean and Southern Cone government. Watch whether the network produces an actual joint interdiction or extradition in the coming months, since agreements without an operational record won't survive a change of government in any signatory capital.
