Panama’s former Hutchison terminals post double-digit volume declines under their new operators
So what? The steeper loss at Cristóbal on the Atlantic side suggests carriers are routing around the transition, and I expect the declines to persist until permanent concessions are awarded. Container-targeting work at both ports now depends on new operators’ data feeds, so the check is whether manifest data keeps flowing.

Panama moves to strip three U.S.-sanctioned tankers from its flag over Iranian oil shipments
So what? Panama is again following a U.S. designation quickly under its 2024 decree, which pushes the ships toward opaque registries. Deflagged tankers often keep trading under new or false flags, so port-state checks should look at flag history, not just the current flag.

Panama's maritime chief flies to Beijing as China's Panama-flag ship detentions keep easing
So what? A de-escalating detention count alongside direct ministerial-level talks suggests both sides want a managed off-ramp rather than an open-ended trade squeeze, which matters because sustained vessel flight from the Panama registry raises compliance costs across fleets that transit or flag through the canal corridor. The talks are also a live test of how much leverage Beijing is willing to exert over a foreign-flagged merchant fleet to contest a U.S.-aligned port ruling, a precedent other China-dependent trade routes will be watching.
