A copy of the Salvadoran model also deepens Costa Rica’s security alignment with San Salvador, which matters for who liaison offices work through. Gang retaliation against ports and prosecutors is the risk to watch in the first months.

So what?  Yesterday's edition carried about 450 troops and this Reuters-sourced count is about 1,000, though counts differ by source; the larger figure would equal half the force's current strength. A hostage search of that size will likely pull the force off road and neighbourhood security around the capital for weeks, delaying any easing of the displacement that has pushed nearly 1.5 million people from their homes. A quick recovery of the four would change that read.

So what?  What is new since Thursday’s rescue launch is a larger Salvadoran footprint, not a recovery. A force that cannot retrieve its own people is unlikely to widen its perimeter soon, which keeps the push factor for Haitian departures in place. The test is whether the four are released alive, since Bukele has threatened a stronger response if not.

So what?  Bukele’s public ultimatum makes a unilateral Salvadoran raid into gang-held ground more likely, which would test whether other contributors such as Chad, Jamaica and Guatemala keep troops in the force. A failed rescue or a Salvadoran pullout would weaken the only force contesting the capital, whose gang violence has displaced nearly 1.5 million people.

So what?  A journalism consortium documenting incommunicado detention and undisclosed charges more than a year into a partner government's custody could complicate the political sustainability of the third-country detention arrangement, regardless of its formal legal status. Renewed scrutiny of El Salvador's prison system also bears on any future removal or transit arrangement that assumes due-process guarantees once custody passes to that system.

So what?  A fifth of a staple-grain harvest lost in a country that already sends a steady stream of migrants north is a concrete, near-term push factor rather than a slow-building one — expect the effect to register in northbound flows over the following harvest cycle rather than immediately. The government's emergency food-assistance rollout for irrigation-poor rural households is the signal to watch: a fast, well-funded response would blunt migration pressure, while a stalled one would compound it heading into the fall harvest.

So what?  Washington's continued embrace of Bukele's now-unlimited-term bid, without any public reservation, signals the security and deportation-cooperation relationship outweighs democratic-backsliding concerns in this partnership, an opening for deeper joint counter-gang and removal-flight cooperation. It also sets a precedent other regional leaders eyeing their own term-limit changes will read as Washington declining to penalize the move, worth watching in Honduras' and Guatemala's own political trajectories.
