Closer Jordanian–Israeli border coordination, which the officials’ complaints suggest is lacking, would be the signal of a reversal.

My lean is a limited air-defence or naval-escort contribution rather than ground troops, which still puts an Egyptian presence near the southern Red Sea approaches to the Suez route. Cargo-security planning keyed to Suez should treat this week's uptick as provisional capacity, not a durable reopening, since a single high-profile Red Sea incident would likely send routing back toward the Cape overnight.

So what?  A route that idled for two years over Houthi Red Sea attacks is recovering not because that threat eased but because an even larger one closed the alternative at Hormuz — chokepoint traffic can snap back quickly once shippers have a worse risk to compare against. Expect Suez volumes to keep climbing as long as both threats persist, then reverse just as fast if either chokepoint reopens.

So what?  A rare head-of-state visit timed explicitly to the Iran war’s fallout signals Beijing intends to convert a distracted, Hormuz-focused Washington into an opening for its own security and economic ties across a region CBP’s forward liaison and cargo-security posture has historically leaned on US-aligned partners to sustain. Expect Beijing to press similar economic-security agreements with other rattled Arab states over the coming weeks, using Cairo as the template.

So what?  Since the first Economic Outcast warnings, Treasury has widened the target from broad notices to a named individual banker and a specific correspondent-banking mechanism, a shift toward person-level enforcement that raises compliance risk for any bank or trade financier still touching Gulf entities with Iran exposure. Expect more individually-named Gulf bankers and shell entities to follow as Treasury works through the shadow-banking network it says the $1.8 billion flowed through.

So what?  A pact whose own architects feel compelled to publicly deny targeting Iran suggests the signatories want to keep the door open to Tehran even while building a formal collective-defense structure alongside it. If Egypt does join, the resulting four-country bloc would put a mutual-defense commitment across both the Red Sea and the Gulf, changing which governments expect a say in future chokepoint security incidents.
